Title: Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month Fact: Captain Francis B. Wai joined the National Guard and was commissioned as an officer in 1941. Wai was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions in 1944 in the Philippines. After their leaders had been killed or wounded, the American troops were disorganized, so he took command. He was killed after purposely drawing fire to himself to reveal enemy positions. His actions allowed the Americans to defeat the enemy. His award was upgraded to a Medal of Honor in 1998.
