Awareness videos are designed for EO/EEO practitioners as training enhancement products. Additionally, these videos can serve as awareness tools for all members within an organization.
"Short Takes" are made available by the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, Patrick Air Force Base, Florida. They are for informational and training purposes only and are presented to apply to all Department of Defense agencies. "THE MAFIA"
During an Annual Diversity Cultural Celebration, a female Service member state that the Italian-American presentation & booth displays are a waste of time.
"KUNG FU"
A male Service member is annoyed by comments made in his work place. He is not sure what action to take since it is his supervising officer displaying the unacceptable behavior.
"SUSPICION"
A male Service member tells you that three individuals have threatened to beat him up. He believe this is due to his race.
"SCARE TACTICS"
Two junior enlisted females feel a couple of coworkers are trying to intimidate them. These women are trying to scare them and they are not sure what they are capable of doing.
"NOT ENOUGH TIME"
A Hispanic-American male claims he is receiving unfair treatment because of a thick, pronounced accent. This comes to a head during an important command level briefing.
"PRIVILEGE"
An enlisted member believes he was passed over for a promotion because of his race.
"PROHIBITED ARTWORK"
A swastika is drawn on the front door of a Jewish service member's dorm room.
"FIVE COURSE MEAL"
Unit members are organizing their annual potluck and when a Korean members offers to bring in a dish, his coworkers begin to making inappropriate comments.
"NOTES"
A bi-racial couple receives several anonymous notes. The notes initially started in the work place, but they are now receiving them at home.
"TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT"
A male employee has a supervisor that is very touchy/feely. He does not want it to damage their working relationship, however, he wants the behavior to stop.
"YOU'RE NOT MY TYPE"
A male service member is working on ideas for Woman’s History Month. While working on the observance, the person he was assigned to work with made multiple advances toward him.
"WHY CAN'T I"
A female service member shares that she is never given the opportunity to complete physical tasks. She has notified her supervisor with regards to this matter, but nothing has changed.
"TRAINING DAY"
Rumors of sexual harassment have been identified by unit members, but no incidents or formal complaints have been reported.
"WHY ARE YOU SPEAKING SPANISH"
Several members in the unit are speaking Spanish to each other while on duty. The conversations appear to be on personal time and not associated with the mission.
"PHYSICAL TRAINING FAILURE"
A military member is not meeting physical training standards and her male supervisor has offered to provide her with additional training focused on “stretching” after duty hours.
"THESE COMMENTS ARE SERIOUS"
While reviewing the results from an organizational assessment, the comments area reveals an area of concern regarding leadership.
"WHAT DID YOU SAY"
Two individuals are making stereotypical and inappropriate comments on the issue of giving out reparations for slavery.
"QUOTES OF REALITY"
A military member complains about another person in the unit using derogatory language towards other people. They state that the language is used everyday and the offender even smiles when using this type of language.
"TEASING TURNS PERSONAL"
A female civil service employee sustained a permanent injury to her leg while serving in Iraq. She tells you that members of her organization are constantly making jokes about her injury and she is annoyed by their lack of respect.
"AWARENESS OF THE EXTREMES" A service member has notified you that an inappropriate note was placed in his personal belongings. The action appears to be associated with extremist behavior.
"PROUD TO BE ME" A service member overhears his supervisor mocking and using verbal epithets pertaining to his religion. The member becomes offended and embarrassed and tells the EOA he wants the behavior to stop.
"MYTH vs. REALITY" After overhearing a conversation about sports, a service member interjects his thoughts about the sports team. A co-worker strongly disagrees and begins to insult the service member by making stereotypical comments about his race.
"DOES AGE MATTER" A complaint investigator is making an inquiry into a formal EEO complaint brought by a group of senior civilian employees who claim that their performance ratings are unjustly lower than the other members of their unit who are much younger.
"ANONYMOUS PERCEPTIONS" After receiving an anonymous tip regarding an anti-immigration newsletter being written by a service member during duty hours, members of the unit voice their concerns.
"ANNOYING MISJUDGMENTS" A young NCO notifies you that an older officer in the unit is badgering him about his age and the awards he has received. He does not want to be referred to in this manner and wants someone to tell the older officer to cease.
"REALITY OF A VACATION" An employee comes to you stating his requests for time off are being denied based on his age.
"FALLING OUT AT WORK" A service member has concerns about her recent break up with a boyfriend. She informs you that she is scared her ex-boyfriend is stalking her.
"HALLWAY CHATTER SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS"
After overhearing several military members in your unit make offensive remarks, you decide to plan a training session on diversity awareness and sensitivity.
"KNOWN VERSUS THE UNKNOWN"
A supervisor will not give challenging assignments to younger members or members who have been deployed to hostile areas. While discussing the issue with him, the supervisor explains that he has a good team, but has only one guy with the experience he can trust to handle critical tasks.
"ELECTRONIC HUMOR STINGS"
A military member complains to you that his supervisor is always forwarding inappropriate and disparaging emails to him and other members of the unit, even after he has requested the supervisor stop.
"YOUTH TRUMPED BY AGE"
A female military member tells you that her supervisor seems to treat the younger military personnel differently from the older personnel in her unit. She tells you the supervisor does not assign the younger personnel to important jobs and he has made negative comments about her age.
"BREAK ROOM BLAST"
A male civilian employee comes to you because he would like to take a career development course, but his supervisor has denied him entry into the course on three occasions. The supervisor commented that he should have taken these types of courses when he was younger since they will not benefit him at this stage of his career.
