Medical Treatment, Waivers of Immunization, and DNA Samples The Department of Defense affords its members the privilege of applying for waivers of medical treatment and immunizations based on religious belief and practice. One instruction, Immunizations and Chemoprophylaxis, provides guidance for all the Services. Each, however, has attached a Service-specific identification to this unified instruction: Army Regulation 40-562 BUMEDINST 6230.15A AFJI 48-110 CG COMDTINST M6230.4F Of particular interest in this instruction are the following sections or tables: Section 2.6 (Exemptions; paragraph b(3)ff, Religious) lays out procedures for applying for an exemption. Note that paragraph b(3)4 states that those who have an active, but as yet unapproved, exemption request submitted are "temporarily deferred from immunizations pending outcome of their request." Section 3-2 (Civilian employee and contracted workers), paragraph b(4), addresses the issue of immunizations and children attending DOD schools and daycare Table C-1: Medical exemption codes Table C-2: Administrative exemption codes SECNAVINST 1730.8B (Accommodation of Religious Practices) also addresses requests for waivers of immunization (paragraph 8); in addition, it addresses requests for waivers of DNA samples (paragraph 9). |
