Introduction

Welcome to the Research, Development, and Strategic Initiatives (RDSI) Directorate at DEOMI!

The research conducted by the RDSI informs DEOMI's human relations education and training programs, delivers best practices, programmatic strategies, and advanced technology to tackle complex human relations challenges, and provides a basis for DEOMI to make policy recommendations, all while adding valuable information to the growing body of scientific knowledge. This work is accomplished in several ways with the ultimate goal of increasing total force readiness across the Department of Defense.

The RDSI provides opportunities for high school, undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students as well as visiting summer faculty to participate in research at DEOMI. We benefit greatly from their support as they provide new perspective to the topics we research daily. Such topics include equal opportunity/equal employment opportunity, diversity and inclusion, sexual harassment, avatar and other simulation work, and more!

DEOMI STEM Internship Program

The DEOMI STEM Internship Program's goal is to encourage high school, college, and graduate level students to enter into STEM-related careers in the Department of Navy (DoN) or the Department of Defense (DoD) once they have completed their education.

The STEM Internship Program consists of two programs sponsored by the Office of Naval Research:

The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP)

The NREIP is a 10-week, full-time paid research internship program for selected university/college and Master's/Ph-D level graduate students under the guidance of an appropriate mentor. Interns are selected based upon their academic record, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and their career and research interests. Applicants should have majors that are relevant to the research interests of DEOMI as listed in the research areas above.

Apply online at: https://nreip.asee.org/

The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP)

The SEAP is an 8-week, full-time paid research internship program for selected high school students, who have completed at least Grade 9, under the guidance of an appropriate mentor. Interns are selected based upon their academic record, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and their career and research interests. Applicants should have majors that are relevant to the research interests of DEOMI as listed in the research areas above.

Apply online at: https://seap.asee.org/

DEOMI usually selects between 5 and 7 interns each year. There are several research areas that STEM Interns can focus on that include hazing, bullying, culture, diversity, equal opportunity issues, sexual assault, sexual harassment, gender, race, disability, workplace performance, organizational effectiveness, and toxic leadership, just to name a few. Projects can range from experimental design, data collection and analysis, film creation, solutions and technology development, literature reviews, manuscript development, creating surveys, and more!
